Congratulations, Class of 2022!

You did it! On this momentous occasion, reflect for a moment on your enormous achievement. What helped you get here? And…what would have helped you get here, had it been available? More financial aid? Help paying for books or other college expenses? Expanded slots in a desired program? More classes with world-class faculty? Access to alumni in your field of interest?

UW Impact is the UW Alumni Association’s legislative advocacy program. The University of Washington is a public university and receives funding from the State Legislature for priorities such as student support services, faculty and staff compensation, and expansion of degree programs. Investment from the state directly affects the cost of tuition – when investment is down, tuition must go up to cover costs. Recently, the Legislature has provided adequate investment in Washington’s public universities allowing tuition to remain stable. Additionally, the Legislature has expanded its funding for college grants to lower (or eliminate) tuition costs for lower- and middle-class families, and even to provide some funding for books and living expenses.

How do these incredibly helpful investments happen? With YOUR voice. Since 2010, thousands of UW alumni have connected with their state lawmakers to champion funding for the UW and for higher education. Working alongside state relations teams from each public university (plus the community and technical college system), alumni have helped make real change for higher education in our state. But it only happens when we make our voices heard. History has shown us that silence is an invitation to make significant cuts to the higher ed sector.
