2024 Legislative Session Primer

The 2024 Session is right around the corner with the start of the New Year. Last year, UW Impact advocates sent almost a thousand messages to state lawmakers championing students, higher education, and the University of Washington. Our District Dawgs and other UW Impact advocates met with elected officials and attended town halls to show their support for the purple and gold. And together we made an impact! Among many other investments, the state legislature allocated $150 million dollars to UW Medicine to continue it’s safety net care, provided increased state support for staff compensation and invested in high demand degrees and opportunities for Washington students. But there is more work to be done.

Among other important requests this session, the UW needs our legislature to continue to fund UW medicine to ensure that critical services can be provided. If funded, the new UW Allen Scholars Program will provide opportunities to pursue Computer Science degrees to students from first generation, low income, and/or underserved communities. The Regional Initiatives in Dentistry (RIDE) program could help provide dental care to underserved communities acorss Eastern Washington.
